Blade Runner 2049: Memory Lab Is A Glimpse Into The Future Of Interactive VR Cinema
So after trying out the Blade Runner 2049: Memory Lab movie tie in experience all I can say is WOW! Playing this has shown me a glimpse of just how cool movies are going to become over the next few years as we start to figure out new and better ways to bring the viewer into the experience. Having the freedom to somewhat move around inside a cinematic experience like this as it unfolds was really cool but of course not perfect.
Walking around during some scenes became problematic at times. This became very apparent when I wasn’t in just the right spot for a character to be looking at me while speaking, or when I would intersect a set piece but as time goes on and this technology advances I can see this becoming a non issue. Just think about how great it will be when we get to a point where the characters in these types of experience s are spatially aware of the viewers presence.
Another annoyance I found in this experience was that it seemed to want the player to be facing forward the entire time and when I would turn away from my front sensors I would get a large notification that I wasn’t facing in the proper direction. Even with these small issues I have to say that this was a great experience and if you have an Oculus Rift or a Gear VR I would highly recommend giving this a look. It is a free experience so other than the large amount of hard drive space it takes up you really have nothing to lose!
